Which Hardwood Floors Can Be Resurfaced 3

If you are looking at installing a hardwood floor, or wondering if you can resurface your existing hardwood floor, it’s a fair question to ask. Hardwood floors come in a variety of different styles, and whether or not your floor can be safely resurfaced may depend on its condition and the thickness of the wear layer.

Hardwood Floors You Can Resurface

Here is the breakdown of the different styles of hardwood that you can safely resurface:

Solid Hardwood Floors. Typically, solid hardwood floors are made from a single piece of wood. You can sand and refinish them multiple times. If you need to remove surface imperfections, scratches or stains, you can do so and then refinish solid hardwood with new stain and topcoat.

Engineered Hardwood Floors. Engineered hardwood floors feature a think layer of hardwood veneer, attached to a plywood core. The thickness of the wear layer or hardwood veneer determines their resurfacing.

If the wear layer is thick, say 2-6 mm, you can usually safely sand and refinish it. However, it’s best not to sand a floor with a thin wear layer, as it could expose the core material.

Pre-Finished Hardwood Floors. Pre-finished floors have a factory applied finish that the manufacturer uses UV lights to cure. You can sand and refinish them, but you may need to use special equipment and a specific technique to remove the factory finish.

Bamboo and Cork Floors. Bamboo and cork aren’t technically hardwood, but you can refinish them in most cases, depending on their construction. You should follow the same guidelines for engineered cork or bamboo as you do for engineered hardwood.

If you do decide to refinish your floor, it’s important to carefully assess its condition, thickness and its type of finish. If you’re concerned about doing the job properly, you can call on an independent contractor to refinish your floors safely.
