Whether or not LVP (luxury vinyl plank) flooring requires underlayment is a question we hear frequently. It’s a fair question to ask, since the question can have different answers, depending on multiple factors. Below we’ll hopefully answer the question for these situations.
When LVP Flooring Doesn’t Require Underlayment:
In most cases, luxury vinyl plank flooring doesn’t require underlayment. LVP flooring usually comes with attached underlayment, such as a built-in pad. If you purchased LVP that has this attachment, you typically won’t need to add underlayment.
You also won’t need underlayment when you’re installing LVP over existing vinyl, laminate, or hardwood. Usually the existing flooring already acts as a cushion, and makes additional underlayment unnecessary.
When LVP Flooring Might Require Underlayment:
There are some situations where underlayment is required or recommended:
- Concrete subflooring: Underlayment over a concrete subfloor will help protect from moisture and sound dampening.
- Uneven subflooring: If you have an uneven subfloor, underlayment can help to smooth out bumps and imperfections.
- Soundproofing needs: In upstairs rooms or apartments, sound reduction is a factor, and underlayment is a recommended idea. Some building codes may actually require soundproofing and underlayment.
- Cold floors: If you’re adding LVP flooring to a basement floor or other cold area, underlayment will help add insulation and keep the floor warmer.
When You Should Not Use Extra Underlayment:
In some cases you should actively avoid using underlayment in your LVP flooring. For example, if your LVP has a pad attached and the manufacturer specifically advises not using underlayment, adding it can void the warranty and cause problems with the locking system.
You can also contact the manufacturer and ask specifically whether they recommend against using underlayment for their LVP flooring.
