As a hardwood flooring installation company, we frequently get asked what is the best way to clean hardwood floors. There’s actually several steps to keeping your hardwood floors clean and protecting the surfaces, and below is a list of a few things you can do.
Tips For Cleaning Hardwood Floors:
These are general steps for hardwood floor cleaning, that will keep your surfaces clean and smooth for years to come:
Sweeping + Dust Mopping. This is a good starting point; use a soft-bristle broom or dust mop and sweep out all of the loose dirt and dust.
Vacuuming. Set your vacuum cleaner for hardwood floors and use it to pick up the smaller particles of dirt. (Check and make sure that the vacuum has soft wheels.)
Using Floor Cleaner. For actual cleaning, you should use a pH-neutral, hardwood flooring cleaner. Don’t use harsher chemicals that can damage wood, and similarly, avoid using too much water. A water-vinegar solution can work.
Damp Mopping. Use the cleaning solution to lightly dampen your mop (again, not too wet), and mop the floor in the direction of the wood grain. Wring out the mop thoroughly.
Spot Cleaning. To remove stubborn stains, try a soft cloth or a sponge, using the cleaning solution. Be careful to wipe lightly so as not to damage the finish.
Drying. It’s important to make sure that the floor is completely dry after you finish mopping and removing stains. Excess moisture can damage floors. Try a dry mop or towels.
Protecting The Floor. If your floor is in a high traffic area, try putting a rug or a mat in the area to protect it from scratches and wear. This is especially useful under furniture pegs.
Your flooring installation should come with a manual for its care. Be sure to read the recommendations, and schedule cleaning and maintenance to keep your floor looking great for years to come.
