What is More Durable, Hardwood or Laminate Flooring

As flooring professionals, we’re frequently asked, “What is more durable, hardwood or laminate flooring?” While the answer on the surface seems simple, there’s actually a few factors that come into play. We’ve listed a few details below about the differences between hardwood and laminate flooring and what you should know.

Hardwood vs. Laminate Flooring – Durability Factors

While hardwood flooring tends to be more durable than laminate flooring, there are some things to consider:

1) Material. Hardwood’s longevity comes from it being made with real wood. With laminate flooring, the construction is from a composite wood base, with the wood grain image printed on the surface. Laminate flooring is protected with a layer of melamine or aluminum oxide.

2) Thickness. Hardwood flooring’s durability also stems from it being thicker than laminate flooring. A thicker material tends to be more durable and last longer.

3) Refinishing. Hardwood flooring can be sanded and refinished multiple times, so the owner can remove scratches or other damage. In contrast, laminate flooring cannot be refinished…if it gets damaged, the owner would have to replace the damaged planks.

4) Moisture Resistance. In this regard, laminate flooring has an advantage. Its protective layer resists water and moisture, so long as spills are cleaned up quickly. Hardwood flooring, on the other hand, is susceptible to moisture and can be damaged by it.

5) Wear and Tear. Again, while hardwood flooring can pick up scratches, these can be refinished and the look can be restored. Laminate flooring is more resistant to scratches, but it can still take damage from impacts or sharp objects, and would require replacement of planks if so.

Finally, whether you choose hardwood or laminate flooring, it’s best to have the project done by trained professionals who use quality materials. While hardwood flooring may last longer, both types of flooring can last for many years with proper installation, maintenance and care.
